Suipurak Transect Walk daily report

Day 4: 17 January.

0745h. Siamang and agile gibbons heard from Camp. Siamang to southwest,agiles to east.

0800h. Leave Camp. Find tapir tracks again at Sungai Durian this time returning to Muara.

0815h. Inspect sambar wallow near Camp Durian. Heavy rain previously had obliterated clear prints but signs that the wallow is still in use.

0830h. Tapir track again at the Muara.

0900h. Find fisherman's camp on east side of the river.Its composition sunggested it had been made by fishermen using poison (three layers of smoking racks suggest hopes of a big catch ).500 m east of Muara .

0945h. Follow Sungai Sipurak to Pulao Kalong.2 D Nav. Otter species (probably Aonyx cinerea ) spraints seen here. Riverside trails ends at Pulau Kalong. Cross here and return along river.

1000h. All three Amorphophallus species seen on river islands. There more fishing camps found.The newest being possibly two months old. Gaharu collectors Camp found with evidence of gaharu collecting.

1030h. Fisherman's camp at Muara destroyed. Return to camp for lunch.

1300h. Follow Sungai Durian trail to check for evidence of tiger. Usually a resident tiger is present in the area and passing animals regurlaly pass along this small river.Prints are easy to see because of the frequency of sand along the watercourse.

1300h. Tapir tracks from the previous night.Philautus sp.Frog caught.Rizanthes colony found alongside trail to Sungai Durian.

1345h. At the small saltlick / wallow along Sungai Durian evidence that bearded pig have been using it.these animals are seasonal migrants and many been seen intermittently in Sipurak.No evidence of new rafflesia (rafflesia hasselti ) flowers.Two old flowers seen.

1400h. Bearded pig footprints along Sungai Durian.

1430h. Climb up to the ridge trail above Sungai Durian.No evidence of tiger was seen.

1900h-2130h. Night survey to sambar wallow. No new evidence of sambar,but wallow is still clearly used. Three species of racophorus frogs identified and four orthoptera captured for photographs.

Day 5 : 18.January

Return along Sungai Dingin trail and Pematang Jerat to Pondok Pasir.

0730h. Siamang and agile gibbons heard from Camp Durian.

0800h. Photographs made of three orthopera species captured last night.

1130h. There siamang seen along Pematang Bakar trail. Tiger tracks seen along Pematang Bakar.These were new tracks probably from last night Appeared to have been made by the same animal as previously recorded here. Camp at Pondok Pasir.

1900h.-2130h. Night survey around camp for frogs.Four species caught and identified all belonging to the Ranidae.R.macrodon,R.picturata, R, hosii and Huai Sumatrana.

Day 6 : 19.January

0530h. From PP one group of agile gibbons heard calling to the Northwest.

0730h. Group leaves for Bedeng VII.

0800h. Hear Bucheros vigil along Lumayang trail.

0815h. Dicrurus sp.seen.

0820h. Two Bucheros rhinoceros heard and seen.

0910h. Small snake Rabdophis chrysargus seen alongside the river Lumayang

0950h. Pair of Bucheros vigil seen in forest before ujung ladang.

1200h. Pair of Accipter hawks seen from at Bedeng VII.
