Day 3 : 16 January

Walk trail to inum Panas.

0800h. Siamang heard from Camp Durian

0830h. Evidence of manao and kayu pacat collecting found.

0900h. Footprints of sambar / bearded pig seen along trail. First GPS made along Pematang Jerat. From this point evidence of trapping found. Drift fence had been erected and the remains of twenty-five foot snares discovered.These were about one to two months old and set for small deer. First banded leaf monkeys Presbytis melalophus seen along P.Jerat.Group of six. Vitacimin packet found at one trap site. (Distinctive rubbish ).

1015h. Investigate sambar wallow for footprints.Find prints of porcupine Hystrix brachyura. 1035h. First evidence of elephant-dung, perhaps there or four months old.

1045h. See female sambar along pematang trail.

1100h. Find first elephant, Elephas maximus footprints at Bukit Tengkorak.Appears to be four animals including one calf. Follow these tracks as far as the Inum Panas (GPS above

1130h. Forty plus hornbill mostly Aceros undulates(wreathed hornbill ) in a fruiting fig tree. Banded leaf monkeys heard.

1200h. Arrive at Inum Panas and discover that elephant had slept the night there,but moved only early this morning. See a family of bearded pig at the wallow-one adult and four young.

1200-1300h. GPS coordinates made from Inum Panas.

1300h. Leave Inum Panas.

1420h. Heavy rain until Camp Durian.
