Day 2 : 15 January

0730h.-0800h. Bird species point count.results : Mostly small canopy species recorded.Hornbills and squirrel species seen. .

0800h. Leave camp and enter trail to Camp Durian. TNKS paint mark made at entry point to forest.

0810h. Bucheros rhinoceros heard calling.

0820h. Bucheros vigil x 2 heard. One group of agile gibbon, Hylobates agilis heard to southwest.

0825h. A recent tree fall has blocked the path and we note that nobody had attempted to pass it yet.

0910h. Tiger, Panthera tigris sumatrae scrape seen along Pematang trail. ( Pematang means ridge ) Over the next kilometer seven scrapes are seen, two fresh (one day old ). Estimate that tiger had passed along this trait twice in the last week, Team members are shown how best to distinguish scrapes made by tiger and tapir. Tiger,pugs found on muddy area of trail.The team is shown the two basic measure Ments used in recording the size of the tiger footprints.One clear pug on a fresh scrape is measured. Total length from heel to tip of longest toe 10 cm.Widest point of plant 8 cm. Four more scrapes and six more prints found before Pematang Bakar.

0945h. Two groups of siamang Hylobates syndactylus heard from this point, one group to the west, one the northwest. Between Pematang Bakar and Bukit Kaca more tiger scrapes seen, in total twenty , five of which were from last night. One old pondok along trail used by manao collector.

0915h. Argus heard at Bukit Kaca.Prints of sambar Cervus unicolor and muntjac, Muntiacus muntjac.Trees heavily scarred wuth graffiti. Petiole of Amorphophallus gigas along Sungai Dingin trail. Distinguishing features of the petiole are noted.

1200h. Lunch at pondok Pacat. This camp also showed no signs of recent use.

1400h. Bucheros rhinoceros heard along Sungai Dingin trail . Muntjac, Muntiacus muntjac prints found and first tapir,Tapirus indicus tracks.

1430h. Tapir tracks seen again at Muara Air Hangat / Sungai Dingin where animal crossed the river.GPS reading made at Muara from Muara enter important muddy trail to Camp Durian.

1500h. Tapir and sambar tracks are found along this trail. Meet Malay sunbear, Helarctos malyanus prints.Tapir track seen until Sungai Durian. Arrive at Camp Durian. Camp frame had been destroyed by hunters / fishermen. Forest around camp cleared of low vegetation by bearded pig, Sus barbatus oi. GPS reading from above Camp Durian.

1530h. Heard A.galeritas.

1600h. Two Rizanthes zappeli flowers seen and photographed 200 m from Camp Durian.
