Day 1 : 14.January

0730 h. Start from Bedeng VII. First GPS coordinates made from the roadside at Bedeng VII

0730 h. Rhinoceros hornbill, Buceros rhinoceros x 2 seen from road over Sungai . Merangin. Descend to gallery forest alongside Merangin. No sign of recent tree falling Forest bird species such as drongo, Dicrurus sp.seen. Amorphophallus titanium petiole on east bank ( full-sized ).Another young plant further down. There Amorphophallus titanium petioles on west bank of river forest. Note characteristics of petiole. ( Sungai means stream)

0800h. Group of bush crested hornbill, Anorhinus galeritas x 10 seen feeding on fruit (buah damar ? ) in riverine forest.This remaining forest along the river is discovered to be a valuable envirotment.

0800-0830h. Rest at point above merangin and interview local people about their farming practices in the area.

0830h. Enter ladang.coffee and cinnamon. ( Ladang means farm )

0900h. Birds are scarcer here but there circling raptors are seen.They appear to be different species.Identified as Buteo sp.and Accipiter sp..

1130h. The final hill before entering the forest is named Bukit Pur.This point marks a good place to sit for a while. Good views over the surrounding country allow panoramic photographs to be made. Indicator bird and mammal species can also be heard from this point. From B.Pur target species birds Argus pheasant, Argusianus argus and helmeted hornbill, Buceros vigil are both heard calling from the adjacent forest, but probably too late for gibbons. Panorama photographs of forest vistas are made and coordinates taken. photograph of forest edge showing limits of incursion. Paint marks made to show point of entry into the forest.

1200h. Enter the forest. Two helmeted hornbill, Bucheros vigil calling and one pair seen. find Amorphophallus beccari and note characteristic of the petiole.

1210h. Giant squirrel, Rattufa affinis seen.

1240h. A 100m length of muddy trail reveals that neither people nor animals have passed this way recently.(Two years ago tiger pugs were seen here.One year ago only foot prints of manao collectors. ) Follow Sungai .Lumayang ang find no evidence of fisherman's camps.(This river heavily over fished in the past.)

1300h. Amorphophallus titanium seen along Sungai Lumayang.

1430h. Arrive at Pondok Pasir. No recent rubbish at PP shows that no has used this site for some time.

1440h. B.rhinoceros x 2 seen.

1900h. Rana picturata (spotted stream frog ) heard calling and caught.
