Day 1: 18.June 2001

1030hr.Arrive at road head Renah Kayu Embun via gravel and dirt road running south from desa Renah Kayu Embun. First GPS coordinates made Walk west and southwest through established ladang (cinnamon with some underplanting of coffee) towards north-east slopes of Bkt Sitinjulaut. Approximately 60 per cent or more of ladangs overgrown and temporarily abandoned due to current low commodity prices. 1107hr Siamang heard from foothills of G. Raya. Lanius schach (long tailed shrike. Benten kelabu) seen. Sumatran tree pie/Tangkar uli Sumatera Dendrocitta occipitalis seen.. Copyschus saularis Magpie robin seen

1240hr Edge of main ladang area of Renah Kayu Embun .Ladang farmer employing cans suspended on rope to frighten off crop-raiding wild pig. Recently (1999-2000) cleared forest (not planted) to immediate west. Four 'bird catchers from Siulak reported as entering Renah Kayu Embun hill forests four days earlier by ladang farmer (Kemun). Transect group walks south west on well-used narrow trail through disturbed secondary fragment forest (evidence of pig - Sus scrofa - activity) to enter partially overgrown area of ladang (approximately 2.5ha) inside TNKS approximately 500m west of Pal Batas 1090 in concealed valley at 1245m asl. Plaintive cuckoo (Cacomantis merulinus). Ashy drongo Dicrurus leucophaeus

Rest and lunch. Rain.

Trail cut southwest 100m through heavy ladang-edge scrub (belukar tua) to enter tall hill forest and an occasionally-used human-made trail (old rintis) running south along northern foothills of Bkt Setinjlaut. Sambar wallow* (active) 200m south west of ladang edge and prints of sambar*. Pig* (probably Sus scrofa) prints. Prints of Malay tapir* close to rusa wallow. Ficedula westermanni - little pied flycatcher. Heavy rain. Trail enters extensive flat, poorly drained mainly primary forest between G Raya and B.Setinjlaut. Average dbh of trees 30 cm+/-. Vegetation dominated by palms (rattan and pandanus) and pinang hutan, all species favouring damp, poorly drained forest. Camp. No GPS (dm) at approximately. Three spp tree and stream frog heard calling overnight. To be identified. Rain intermittent.
